OptionsModel & Bore
Ultramation offers an extensive combination of cylinder bore to guide shaft sizes. Almost all units accommodate multiple bore sizes to give the designer maximum flexibility when sizing for an application. For bore sizes not listed, please contact our factory.
Cylinder Type & Manufacturer
A variety of cylinders are available for use with the linear thrusters. Both pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders are offered as well as various mounting configurations. Different manufacturers' cylinders than those listed can easily be supplied and incorporated into thruster designs. Options range from dry service to magnetic pistons for position sensing. Units can also be ordered without the cylinder.
Cylinder Options
Optional internal bumpers are available on most units to reduce end of stroke cycling noise. Optional adjustable cylinder cushions are also available for either the head or cap or both. A captive cushion screw provides easy and safe adjustment of the cylinder cushion while in operation. Most cushion adjusts are located on the same side as the cylinder ports. Other cushion locations can be specified.
Bearing Options
Industrial grade linear recirculating ball bearings are standard on all linear thrusters. Optional composite TFE lined bearings are available. Linear ball bearings exhibit higher precision, low sliding friction and require lubrication. Composite bearings have lower precision, increased sliding friction and are self lubricating. Composite bearings function well in washdown or contaminated operating environments.
Auxiliary Mounting Plate
An optional auxiliary mounting plate provides flexible mounting of the linear thrusters. The mounting plate can be specified to be located in three different locations making it an extremely versatile component. Unless otherwise specified, the auxiliary mounting plate is located between the housing and the tooling plate. The gap between the tooling plate and the housing is maintained regardless of mounting plate location. Therefore, no stroke loss is incurred with bottom of housing mounting option.
Tooling Plate
Multiple tooling plate configurations are available for each linear thruster giving the designer maximum interface flexibility. A short counterbored steel tooling plate is supplied as standard. Optional long tooling plates offer increased interface contact and support. Consult factory for tooling plate modifications.
Stainless Steel
The basic linear thruster tooling plates, guide shafts, collars and hardware are carbon alloy steel. Several stainless steel options provide various levels of corrosion protection. The stainless steel options are all supplied with stainless steel tooling plates, shaft collars, cylinder rods and hardware. The F2 option with stainless steel shafting and composite bearings offers the best solution for contaminated or washdown environments.
Position Sensors
Magnetic Reed Switches Magnetic reed switches are available on nearly all air cylinders offered with Ultramation Linear Thrusters. Reed switches are actuated by the close proximity of a magnet which is included within the cylinder as part of the piston assembly. A reed switch contains a normally open sealed reed that closes or makes in the presence of a magnetic field. The reed switch returns to the normally open state once the magnetic field is removed. Reed switches, both with and without LED position indicators, are used in the vast majority of applications where the magnetic piston briefly comes to rest at each end of the stroke.

| CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS | | | | | |
Solid State Switches Solid state switches are available on nearly all air cylinders offered with Ultramation Linear Thrusters. Like the reed switches, solid state switches are actuated by the close proximity of a magnet which is included within the cylinder as part of the piston assembly. The switch contains circuitry to detect a potential difference when the circuitry is in the presence of a magnetic field. Once detected, the voltage is amplified and used to control a switching output transistor. Being solid state electronic devices, the switches have high trip point accuracies and long life. Models are available in current sinking (NPN) and current sourcing (PNP). |
| |
Inductive Proximity Switches Ultramation offers a line of highly reliable inductive proximity switches manufactured to provide long-term service in industrial applications. The switches feature a rugged cadmium chrome plated brass case designed to withstand the most aggressive environments.
The proximity switches are fitted into an extremely versatile adapter which can be mounted on any of the eight corners of the Linear Thruster housing. Switch mounting arrangements are designed to sense metal targets attached directly to the tooling plate and a shaft collar. Two-wire AC switches and three-wire DC sinking or sourcing (NPN or PNP) switches are available.

External Bumpers Linear Thrusters may be equipped with external urethane bumpers on both the extend and the retract strokes, and are absolutely essential when it is necessary to adjust or limit either stroke length. An extra set of shaft collars is supplied to prevent bumper movement on the extend stroke and included stainless steel washers protect the shaft seals from impact damage. Use of external bumpers between the housing and the tooling plate usually results in reduced cylinder return stroke. When full stroke is essential, compensate by increasing specified stroke.
NOTE: The single shaft collars supplied with each Linear Thruster are intended for setup purposes only. They must not be used to limit the stroke or serious damage to the Linear Thruster may occur! Hydraulic Shock Absorber Linear Thrusters can be equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers to dissipate the kinetic energy associated with stopping a moving load. The HE (shock ready on extend) and HR (shock ready on retract) options include tapped mounting holes in the Linear Thruster housing, one shaft mounted impact bracket, one shock absorber mounting bracket and mounting hardware. The HB option (shock ready on extend & retract) includes all hardware to mount shock absorbers on both the retraction and extension ends of the Linear Thruster.
NOTE: To prevent damage to the hydraulic shock absorber, a 0.06 inch minimum gap should be set between the shock absorber body and head when fully retracted. | MODEL | A | B THREAD | C | D | E | F | | 0 | 0.75 | 3/8-32 UNEF | 1.14 | 1.88 | 0.25 | 1.65 | | 1 | 0.88 | 7/16-28 UNEF | 2.37 | 2.13 | 0.38 | 2.05 | | 2 | 1.00 | 1/2-20 UNF | 3.68 | 3.00 | 0.38 | 2.87 | | 3 | 1.25 | 3/4-16 UNF | 4.47 | 4.00 | 0.50 | 3.75 | | 4 | 1.50 | 1-12 UNF | 4.75 | 5.75 | 0.75 | 5.50 |

Flow Controls
Linear Thrusters may be equipped with right angle pneumatic flow controls. Flow controls are useful for controlling the cylinder speed by metering the exhaust air flow from the cylinder.
No Shaft Collars
Linear Thrusters are equipped with a set of shaft collars for setup purposes. Selection of no shaft collars removes the collars from the unit.
